But his skills are stretched to the limit when he must face the evil Iron Monger. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard also star in director Jon Favreau’s tongue-in-cheek superhero tale based on the popular Marvel comic.

This comedy spoof follows a team of far-from-super heroes as they try to overcome their shortcomings and earn respect. Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), the Shoveler (William H. Macy), the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria) and the Bowler (Janeane Garofalo) get a shot at the big time, but if they screw up, Champion City will be doomed! Mystery Men makes barbed mockery of cinematic superheroics.

In this dizzying, effects-driven drama, two scientists (Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton) chase tornadoes in their quest to record and study them. Taking a backseat to the wild and visually mesmerizing storms are subplots concerning a failing marriage, childhood trauma and corporate ethics. The film received multiple Academy Awards for its spectacular sound and visual effects (including the famous flying cow).

Directed by Roland Emmerich, this mega-budget, special-effects-laden epic revolves around the onset of an international series of crises brought on by the long-term results of the greenhouse effect. At the eye of the storm is paleoclimatologist (a professor dedicated to the study of weather patterns throughout the ages) Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), who voluntarily takes on the preservation of the world in the dawn of the next ice age and all the disaster that comes along with it — violent hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tidal waves, massive floods, etc. Hall must also contact his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), who was in the middle of an academic competition in New York City when the chaos begun. In addition to facing the largest-scale onslaught of natural catastrophes in the history of humankind, Jack, in his journey north, must contend with the masses fleeing south in an attempt to resettle in a warmer climate. Earthquakes look like child’s play compared with what Mother Nature is throwing at Tinseltown this time. A volcano erupts and threatens to engulf downtown Los Angeles. But fear not: Tommy Lee Jones is in ass-kicking, “Listen up, people!” mode as he and scientist Anne Heche make sure the volcano thinks twice before it blows its top on the City of Angels

Jim Henson’s fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn’t take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognize many of the voice actors–a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations–but otherwise it’s a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages
